Notes"The article reports on Spanish writer Juan Goytisolo. He has lived for many years in Marrakesh, Morocco. He is considered by many to be Spain's greatest living novelist. Recently, he was awarded Mexico's prestigious Juan Rulfo prize for his lifetime literary achievement. The award was presented by Gabriel García Márquez. Goytisolo has dedicated much of his literary and political work to criticizing extremism in any form, both Arab and Islamic countries, and the West."

Notes"Renowned Colombian artist Fernando Botero recently donated works worth $200 million to his homeland to encourage cultural growth and an end to violence. Botero's works transcend national borders and cultures, and are accessible to everyone. He has painted the loveable side of Colombia he knew as a child, and the country's political turmoil he sees now." Botero states "someday, taxi drivers of the world will say to Colombian travelers, `Oh, you're from Colombia? Isn't that the country of Nobel laureate Gabriel Garcia Marquez, the Olympic Gold Medal winner in women's weightlifting Maria Isabel Urrutia, and artist Fernando Botero?' And not mention Pablo Escobar even once."

Notes"Drawing upon the author's experiences of growing up white and gay in apartheid South Africa, this collection of personal essays explores themes of kitsch, displacement, love, sexuality, and forgiveness. A central question posed by the work is whether virtues such as love and forgiveness are worth the cost they frequently exact. These costs include, but are not limited to, denial of the self and individual perception in order to make possible a sense of profound union with other persons. In the end the dissertation concludes that it is best to accept a level of permanent and irrevocable yearning for connection and healing which human life will never entirely fulfill." Gabriel García Márquez is mentioned in the dissertation.

NotesThis article discusses the resurgence of tourism in Cartagena, Colombia. The author makes references to Gabriel García Márquez throughout the article. The author states, "Perhaps the biggest sign of Cartagena's renaissance is that Hollywood is taking interest. Director Mike Newell just finished shooting "Love in the Time of Cholera" in Cartagena, a $50 million production with an international cast featuring Spanish actor Javier Bardem. The film, based on a novel by Mr. Gabriel García Márquez, is the first major Hollywood picture produced in Cartagena since "The Mission," starring Robert De Niro, two decades ago."
