  TitleChristopher Helm Identification Guides
  PublicationLondon: Christopher Helm
DescriptionA numerous series of bird handbooks published in the United Kingdom by Christopher Helm and in the United States by Houghton Mifflin and Princeton University Press. Each volume in this highly uniform series is written by well-known experts and has color illustrations by leading bird illustrations. The illustrations are in a separate identification section with brief descriptions and identification tips on facing pages. The identification section is followed by species accounts offering extensive information on the natural history and identification of the birds. Each volume covers a different family of birds worldwide. They are not true field guides, since they are too heavy to carry in the field and are worldwide, but they are included here since advanced birders find them extremely useful.

TitleETI World Biodiversity Database CD-ROM series.
PublicationAmsterdam: Expert Center for Taxonomic Identification
DescriptionThis series of CD-ROM programs features a mix of popular and esoteric subjects. They are published by Springer Verlag for the Expert Center for Taxonomic Identification, a non-profit organization sponsored by the government of the Netherlands, the University of Amsterdam, and UNESCO. Some of the databases are similar to field guides, particularly the Birds of Europe and the Marine Mammals of the World. Some are based on other print works while others are new for the series. While they aren't much good for use in the great outdoors, they are a good source of information and illustrations. All include glossaries.
